Key Takeaways
-
High accuracy doesn't guarantee trustworthiness: While the BERT model achieved 99.39% accuracy in extracting mathematical relationships, the researchers recognized this alone wasn't sufficient—they added explainability tools (SHAP) to help users understand why the model made its predictions, demonstrating that responsible AI requires transparency beyond performance metrics.
-
Explainability reveals what models actually learn: The SHAP analysis showed which specific textual and mathematical features influenced the model's decisions, providing insights into model behavior that wouldn't be visible from accuracy scores alone—this type of transparency is essential for building appropriate trust in AI systems.
-
Specialized tasks benefit from tailored approaches: The study used a task-specific dataset and transformer architecture designed for mathematical text, suggesting that responsible AI development requires careful consideration of domain-specific challenges rather than applying generic solutions, which can improve both performance and interpretability.
-
Explainability enables safer real-world deployment: By making the model's reasoning transparent, this framework supports safer applications in education and automated problem-solving, where stakeholders (teachers, students, developers) need to understand and verify the system's logic before relying on it for important decisions.
Abstract
Mathematical text understanding is a challenging task due to the presence of specialized entities and complex relationships between them. This study formulates mathematical problem interpretation as a Mathematical Entity Relation Extraction (MERE) task, where operands are treated as entities and operators as their relationships. Transformer-based models are applied to automatically extract these relations from mathematical text, with Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) achieving the best performance, reaching an accuracy of 99.39%. To enhance transparency and trust in the model's predictions, Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) is incorporated using Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP). The explainability analysis reveals how specific textual and mathematical features influence relation prediction, providing insights into feature importance and model behavior. By combining transformer-based learning, a task-specific dataset, and explainable modeling, this work offers an effective and interpretable framework for MERE, supporting future applications in automated problem solving, knowledge graph construction, and intelligent educational systems.
